Stripping cloth diapers

You’ll known it’s time to strip your cloth diapers when you notice a strong ammonia smell coming from them while they’re being used.  Also they may have lost their ability to absorb as well.

Don’t’ fret;  this happens to the best of them.  Nothing you’ve done wrong has occurred.
You will have to wash your diapers as per washing instructions.
Then to strip them you will wash them 3-4 more times in hot water (to rince all the detergent out).  If during your rince cycle you still see detergent in the water, wash them again.  This should do the trick.

Alternative methods

On a few occasions the ammonia smell still remains, or your diapers are still not absorbing as they should, you may wish to use DAWN dish detergent as it is great to remove oils.
Squirt a little onto the inside of a clean, dry diaper, scrub with a nail brush. Turn diaper inside out (for pockets) and repeat. Rinse.
Wash as usual in the washer.

Some have found Sensi Clean –Sport Wash (a vegetable based detergent) to give excellent results.  You’d follow the same instructions as above.  Others claim it gave their children a diaper rash.  We have used if for our childen and found no such issue.  Use with above in mind though.

In the future you can attempt to minimize the need for stripping by:

Using less detergent (1/4 cup of recommended amount of store bought detergent is enough)

No harsh diaper creams so build up is on your diaper.
Try using flushable liners or fleece liners when you use diaper creams.

Run an extra rinse cycle each time you wash your diapers.

Or throw a “downy ball” filled with ½ cup of vinegar when you are washing your cloth diapers.  The vinegar dissolves any detergent and also neutralizes any traces of baking soda you may have used.  Too much baking soda residue may cause your little one to get diaper rashes.
